What is getputs?

getputs is a utility for Discovering, Sharing and Recommending User Generated Content.
|
|

Why was getputs created?
|
Back in the days, the getputs team was having a hard time keeping up with all information
flying around everywhere.
So we thought, why not build something that would let others suggest great content to us and that would
let us suggest and share information with others.
This is how getputs started.

What's with the name?
|
|
getputs is named after the legendary Computer Science Functions
get (meaning Get/Read the Data) and put (meaning Put/Write the Data)
|
|
|
What can I do with getputs?
|
Short Answer:
discover, share, recommend
read, write, ask
speak up, interact, communicate
Long Answer:
(1) Read the hottest and latest news and classified submissions from other users.
(2) Take a stand and speak up! Interact with other users by posting your views and comments about a particular story.
(3) Read news, stories, classifieds for the categories you like.
(4) Share whatever you want. Share knowledge, know-how, wisdom, breaking news.
Share the most exciting stories with friends and family.
Bookmark and Save the news or classified items you like and keep it for future reference or research.
(5) The platform is free (as in air), extremely easy to use and pretty feature rich.
To put it all in one line, with getputs, you can “Experience real time knowledge networking.”

How does it work?
|
[Note: For the sake of this answer, an item may refer to any of the following:
a news story, a classifieds submission, a query asked by some user, anything that is user generated.]
getputs collects all sorts of crazy data about
how our users interact with the website,
what each of the users/visitors are reading at any given time,
what kind of post does each user submit,
what items did a user comment on,
what items did a user save to the getputs account,
which items were e-mailed the most
Based on this data collection, the automated algorithms try to make an estimation of which of the items are the hottest and most informative in a given time frame.
Thus, even if a visitor just visits the Front-Page, just skimming through the front-page items would let the visitor know what's going on with the world right now.
Think of it as your online newspaper, but where everyone is an editor and a reader
and where the news-pages are intelligent so as to serve content that is customized
for your taste. |

No seriously, why was getputs created?
|

With our background in Engineering and Computer Science, building great products is what we live for.
After all, a recommendation and discovery platform provides a unique set of challenges.
Algorithmic Item Ranking, Intelligent Tagging, Spam Filtering, Handling huge amount of data, Finding
similarities in the dataset. Not to mention the other parts of software engineering (Front-End Design,
Databases, Network Infrastructure, Extreme Programming, Keeping the servers alive, Having cold pizza's for dinner!)
Didn't I tell you "read this answer only if you ..."?
On a more philosophical note, we were frustrated of there being no single place to follow
all the current happenings (about India in particular). The whole point of the web is being able to communicate with other
folks and being able to broadcast one's point of view. So here starts the revolution!!!

So are you done with building all the features?
|
Not yet. But we are releasing the site early, so that more uses can give us feedback.
We have been working on it during nights and weekends, sacrificing (Video Games, Sports, Sleep)
Alright Alright, am lying about the `Sleep` part!!
We constantly keep on adding useful features.
The engine is still under heavy development and we are constantly improving the product.
